India achieved a momentous breakthrough at the 16th CISM World Military Golf Championship, held in Diani, Kenya, from June 22–28, 2025, with an inspiring debut performance that earned the Indian Armed Forces three medals across elite categories.

Petty Officer Akash Kumar stole the spotlight by claiming gold in the Men’s Individual event, setting a commanding pace throughout the tournament .

Lieutenant Colonel Varoon Parmar delivered a double triumph: securing bronze in the Men’s Individual category, and then topping the Senior Men’s 40+ division with a gold medal—a testament to his enduring skill.

The Indian contingent’s outstanding performance was celebrated by the Ministry of Defence, which highlighted this as a “reassuring maiden performance” at the championship. The MoD and official social media updates echoed the pride in the achievements of Akash and Varoon.

Championship Context and Significance

Organised under the theme “Friendship Through Sport”, the CISM championship brought together military golfers from across the world. Hosted by the Kenya Defence Forces and attended by dignitaries such as Major General Paul Otieno and Navy Captain Roberto Recchia, the event emphasized camaraderie, cooperation, and sporting excellence.

India’s success in Kenya is especially noteworthy: despite this being its debut at the military golf championship, the nation claimed both Men’s Individual gold and Senior Men’s 40+ gold, alongside a Men’s category bronze, showcasing India’s potential in military golf on a global stage.

A Proud Beginning and Future Outlook

Indian defence personnel and the MoD have hailed the results as a powerful entrance into international military golf. This early triumph lays a strong foundation for future participation in CISM events and reinforces morale within the armed forces. With key names like PO Akash Kumar and Lt Col Varoon Parmar leading the charge, India looks ready to become a regular contender.
