If you’ve ever heard someone say, “I’m a 12 handicap,” and had no clue what that means, you’re not alone.
A golf handicap is basically a number that shows how good a golfer is, and it exists for one main reason: so golfers of different skill levels can compete fairly.
A handicap is the number of strokes a player is “allowed” to take in a match.
The rule is simple:
Lower handicap = better golfer
Higher handicap = beginner or improving golfer
It’s not your average score. It’s closer to your ability on a good day.
Because golf isn’t like most sports.
Two people can play the same course, but one might finish in 80 shots and the other in 100.
Handicap helps balance that difference, so the match stays fun and competitive.
Let’s say:
Player A is a 10 handicap
Player B is a 20 handicap
Player B gets 10 extra strokes over 18 holes.
So instead of the better golfer winning automatically, both players get a fair chance based on their level.

A handicap adjusts strokes so golfers of different skill levels can compete fairly.
Broadly:
0 to 5 = very strong golfer
6 to 12 = good club golfer
13 to 20 = most regular golfers
21+ = beginner or improving golfer
And honestly, if you’re improving, you’re winning.
Handicap is calculated using:
This matters because scoring 90 on a tough course isn’t the same as scoring 90 on an easy one.
A handicap:
A handicap isn’t about ego. It’s about fairness.
It’s the reason golf is one of the few sports where a beginner and an experienced player can play together, and both still have a shot at winning.
